Marseille, 1815. Young sailor Edmond Dantès has just been promoted to captain, and is preparing to marry his fiance, Mercedes. However, the treachery of certain jealous peers convicts him of a crime he did not commit, sending him to rot in the dungeon of the Château d'If. There he meets Abbé Faria, who schools him in languages, history, sciences, and weaponry, as well as divulging the location of a lost treasure of the Knights Templar.
They will need more than a decade to make their bid for freedom, so that Dantès may seek vengeance for the affront he has suffered. Dantès seizes the Templars' fortune before returning home to orchestrate his ruthless revenge with a new title, The Count of Monte-Cristo.
From Alexandre Dumas 19th century epic adventure novel, Edmond Dantès is one of the most celebrated characters in French literature, and the story of his revenge has left its mark on popular culture around the world through countless works. This new film adaptation by Alexandre de la Patellière and Matthieu Delaporte, the screenwriters of the recent diptych The Three Musketeers, goes back to the original French text and expands the story beyond familiar English-language adaptations, losing none of the emotional stakes and retaining the classicism of the work through grandiose production design.
The Count of Monte-Cristo is international blockbuster cinema at its finest, a picture that respects its original source material while adding welcome contemporary elements.

"The movie might be set in the early 19th century, but its hero is a 21st century badass." - Bilge Ebiri, New York Magazine/Vulture
"A stunning, emotionally satisfying adventure tale, built on rock-solid source material. Compared to earlier adaptations, this latest version is briskly paced and rousingly acted by an all-around stellar ensemble." - Peter Debruge, Variety
