Alice Diop | France | 2022 | 122m | French with English subtitles
with Guslagie Malanda, Kayije Kagame
Saint Omer court of law. A young novelist, Rama (Kayije Kagame), attends the trial of Laurence Coly (Guslagie Malanda), a young woman accused of killing her 15-month-old daughter by abandoning her to the rising tide on a beach in northern France. But as the trial continues, the words of the accused and witness testimonies will shake Rama’s convictions and call into question our own judgement.
Alice Diop’s stunning narrative debut draws on her experience as a documentarian to give a empathetic and unsentimental study of society, culture, race, and gender. Featuring spellbinding breakthrough performances by Malanda and Kagame, Diop's assured script and direction subverts the conventions of the courtroom drama. In creating a compelling character study of the two women, Diop invites the audience to follow their own emotional journey as she did attending the 2016 trial the film is based upon. Shortlisted for Best International Feature at this year's Oscars.
"This extraordinary film won’t be pushed toward convention, catharsis or conclusion: Diop, like her uncertain observer, is both ally and analyst to one woman’s riveting, unreliable history. - Best movies of 2022 in the US" -Guy Lodge, The Guardian
"In recreating her own experiences watching Kabou’s trial in Saint Omer, Diop has delivered one of the most powerful and personal films of the year." -Lee Jutton, Film Inquiry
