Dog lives in Manhattan and he’s tired of being alone. One day he decides to build himself a robot to be a companion. Their friendship blossoms until they become inseparable, all to the rhythm of 80’s NYC.
All comes to a grinding halt when one summer night, Dog, with great sadness, is forced to abandon Robot at the beach. Will they ever meet again?
Robot Dreams is the first animation film by award-winning Spanish director Pablo Berger, based on the 2007 comic of the same name by Sara Varon. This animated tragicomedy features a soundtrack by Spanish composer Alfonso de Villalonga, who also collaborated with Berger on his last two films Blancanieves (2012) and Abracadabra (2017). Music takes the place of dialogue in this animated tragicomedy, and judging by the reviews nobody misses the spoken word. Robot Dreams has attracted rave reviews and won a whole slew of awards including Best Film at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. Don't miss the film that Variety Magazine chose to include in their list of 22 Overlooked Films of 2023!
"This is an absolutely extraordinary work of art, done in a way that suggests both Saturday morning cartoons and Sunday-night prestige-TV dramedies. It’s also a nine-Kleenex-box movie, and earns every saline-soaked tissue eventually wadded at your feet." -David Fear, Rolling Stone
"'Robot Dreams' leaves us to ponder what its voiceless leads leave unspoken: Is opening our lives to others worth the pain? A silent wonder that says everything about love." -Amy Nicholson, New York Times
"Composer De Vilallonga moves the characters through an upbeat jazz score for hijinks, funk for a fateful repair montage, and sentimental piano for the deeper moments. The film also seamlessly weaves diegetic and non-diegetic sound, as the characters tune their radios or blast music from their cars. It all creates an intimate, specifically New York soundscape that contributes to the film's unsung supporting character: the city itself." -Shannon Connellan, Mashable
