Cory Thibert | Documentary | Canada | 2023 | 84m
NOTE: After the screening, producer and performer Nancy Kenny will appear for a Q&A about the film.
Director Cory Thibert in tandem with Halifax-based producer Nancy Kenny create a playful and insightful look at the Canadian Fringe Festival circuit, inspired by the creative energy they witness during their own tours of the festivals. Along with cinematographer and editor, Natalie Watson, the team of emerging film artists fully capture the spirit and energy of the Fringe in their creative process, resulting in a homespun and engaging documentary.
"The Canadian circuit is more than a tour, it’s an entire culture unto itself,” says Thibert, who spent an entire summer on the road from festival to festival collecting the stories that form the basis for this film, including the experience of producer and performer Kenny and her show, Roller Derby Saved My Soul.
Aside from Kenny, we meet four young artists from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan in the Canadian Prairies: Robert Grier, Grahame Kent, Morgan Murray and Danielle Spilchen. These four different personalities must learn to work together or fall apart before the end of the road.
New York-based performers Martin Dockery and Vanessa Quesnelle met on the touring circuit and then married for the two of them, traveling with the one you love can ease the loneliness of life on the road, but it comes with its own set of frictions.
UK spoken-word artist Jem Rolls structures his entire life around the circuit. This tour is his 100th appearance at a Canadian Fringe Festival, an exciting personal milestone and a Fringe record.
“Through this documentary, I aim to capture the spirit and energy of the Fringe Festival circuit from the artist's perspective," Thibert says, "Why touring across the country for months with your own creation for no guarantee pay can be so rewarding, despite its many challenges. Ultimately this is a love letter to the Fringe Festival circuit, and to the artists and audiences who make it such a unique experience."
