Allan Moyle, Tricia Fish | Canada | 2024 | 97m
with Liane Balaban, Mary Walsh, and Andrew McCarthy
Fifteen-year-old Mooney Potter is a misfit. Her dreams of attending college in New York City are too big for the small, conservative, coal mining town of New Waterford, Cape Breton. In the mid-70s, in this cramped little Catholic community, there's only one reason a young lady would leave and that's if she got into some trouble. A high-spirited sixteen-year-old New Yorker named Lou moves into town, bringing her fists of justice and fury. With the help of her new pal, Mooney comes up with an escape plan.
"Pump Up the Volume's Allan Moyle directs this quirky, charming movie from Tricia Fish's eagle-eyed script." - A. O. Scott, New York Times
"An extremely likable coming-of-age comedy that effectively captures a slice of teen angst, Cape Breton-style." - Brendan Kelly, Variety
