dir. Christine Molloy and Joe Lawlor / Ireland / 2016 / 89 minutes
Presented in partnership with Dalhousie University as part of the New Frontiers in Documentary masterclass and screening series.
On the surface, this documentary by filmmakers Christine Molloy and Joe Lawlor (also known as the Desperate Optimists) is about a journey from Ireland to Chile in the late 1700s. The traveller is Ambrose O'Higgins, father of the first independent leader of Chile, Bernardo O'Higgins. In tracing his path across the Atlantic Ocean, Molloy and Lawler examine ideas of immigration, culture, and place, all while experimenting with the narrative documentary format. The result entwines the creative experience of filmmaking with the transformative experience of travel to see both in a new lens.
Christine Molloy will be present for a Q&A after the screening.
