As a party wanders into the night, word arrives that Renée has emerged from obscurity.

This cataclysmic moment ignites Modeste’s awkward reunion with his older sibling. Renée has been missing for years and her presence unsettles the family, which also includes her own daughter, Athene.

As Renée begins to form her dreams from fragments of her past, ominous premonitions disrupt the land.

Shot over the course of two years, Ste. Anne traces an allegorical reclamation of land through personal, symbolic and historical sites all across Treaty 1 Territory, heartland of the Métis Nation.

"Vermette’s film is full of questions—big and small—that linger in the air amidst a formally experimental piece that feels like a visual collage of emotions, expressions, and metaphor caught at the back of brief vignettes captured on 16mm. The crackle and grain are apparent throughout, yet some moments find themselves consumed by imperfections and halos, adding extras scratches and bands of diffused red light to the flickering of Manitoban landscapes, laughter, and fire burning a fresh path forward." - - Jared Mobarak, The Film Stage

"(S)taggeringly well-composed photography allied to a shifting, heightened soundscape. The nearest analogue I can think of is Kiarostami’s 24 Frames. If you’ve seen that film, and can imagine it as a sort of floating fever dream about Manitoba you might get a slight sense of what Ste. Anne is offering the viewer." - Mat Christian Thomas, International Cinephile Society
