Lia, a retired Georgian teacher, has made a promise to find out what happened to her long-lost niece, Tekla, a trans woman. When Lia learns from a neighbour, Achi, that Tekla might have travelled to Turkey, Lia and Achi set off together to find her and bring her home.

Arriving in Istanbul, they discover a beautiful city full of connections, possibilities, and a robust trans community. But searching for someone who never intended to be found is harder than they expected until they meet Evrim, a lawyer fighting for trans rights. As the odd couple of Lia and Achi weave their way through the city’s backstreets, Tekla starts to feel closer than ever.

Crossing provides a bold and refreshing perspective of a queer culture we don't often see in cinema from this region. As Lia, Mzia Arabuli gives one of the year's outstanding performances as an individual who lives with regret for past mistakes. Even as she sets out to find her niece, she's doing it without much confidence that the end of her journey will bring her absolution, but she's driven to do it anyway. Her quest opens her eyes to a world she didn't know existed.

"Sweet without being cloying, it’s a love letter to the commonalities between Georgian and Turkish culture; one that encourages empathy and reminds us it’s never too late to change for the better." -Hannah Strong, Little White Lies

"[An] unlikely partnership, born out of deep loneliness, gives 'Crossing', an aching story of regret, its steady, unassuming heartbeat." -Robert Daniels, RogerEbert.com

"Dumanli, making her screen feature debut here, is a pure joy to watch, enveloping the movie in a sense of warm coziness and safety as, just being in her presence, you feel like everything will somehow work out." -Ryan Lattanzio, Indiewire
