with Nykiya Adams, Barry Keoghan, and Franz Rogowski
Bailey (Nykiya Adams) is 12-years-old and living in a squat with her young father Bug (Barry Keoghan), a deeply tattooed, fast-talking idea guy. He's looking to marry his recent girlfriend but Bailey disapproves. Deeply independent, rebellious, and older than her years, she sets out into the streets where she crosses paths with the enigmatic Bird (Franz Rogowski), whose mission she will share. His nature is deeply mysterious and magical. Is he an actual bird?
Rogowski (Passages) brings his talents as a dancer and choreographer to the film, with his distinctive way of inhabiting space, while Keoghan (Saltburn) brings a charisma that's made him one of Hollywood's hottest actors. Adams is a lively and distinct discovery, further evidence of filmmaker Andrea Arnold's gift for coaxing astonishing performances from raw, young talent.
Bird announces Arnold's returns to feature filmmaking for the first time since American Honey (2016), and follows a venture into documentary with Cow (2021). This is a film that continues to evince her fascination with British-style kitchen sink social realism, except this time also injecting a compelling element of fantasy and wonder into the mix. Visually splendid and emotionally rich, deeply empathetic and full of genuine hope, Bird is unique, eccentric, and mesmerizing.
"Fish Tank director Andrea Arnold returns to kitchen sink realism - and finds freedom and joy over darkness." -Christina Newland, iNews.co.uk
"It’s a fragile but beautiful vision, and marks the strongest blend yet of Andrea Arnold’s primary directives as a filmmaker." -Clarisse Loughrey, Independent (UK)
"Bird would make a pretty good stage musical — not just because people always seem to be singing, but because it’s achingly, heartbreakingly sincere, and for a character living in chaos, that sincerity can feel like magic." -Alissa Wilkinson, New York Times
