Literally a film like no other, this weird, wild, and extraordinary photoplay is both melodrama and deadpan parody. With striking black and white cinematography and stylized set design, the film tells a tale of obsessive love in the arctic Russian town of Archangel, where Bolsheviks, White Russians, and German Huns converge during World War I. Archangel is perhaps Maddin's most delirious and insensible picture and was his follow-up in 1990 to the cult hit, Tales From The Gimli Hospital.
Maddin is an award-winning Canadian filmmaker with numerous shorts and 11 feature films to his credit, including the Emmy Award-winning ballet film Dracula, Pages from a Virgin’s Diary (2002), The Saddest Music in the World (2003), and My Winnipeg (2007). He is also a member of The Order of Canada & The Order of Manitoba.
Guy Maddin’s body of work is as beautiful as it is confounding. He incorporates the language of past cinema, with which he is most intimately familiar from countless hours of film viewing. He combines this with a pre-cinematic sensibility learned from the books he devours. He's a director of prodigious intellectual appetites and an unexpected wit, reflected in his every film.
