Niels Arden Oplev | France, Denmark | 2022 | 100m | Danish and French with English subtitles

with Sofie Gråbøl, Lene Maria Christensen, Anders W. Berthelsen

Rose is the story of two Danish sisters, Inger and Ellen, and how their relationship is challenged on a coach trip to Paris.

When Inger announces her mental health struggles to the group - she lives with schizophrenia - the sisters are faced with pity from some and discrimination from others. As the trip continues and the Danes spend time seeing the sights, Inger's presence is both a dividing and uniting one for the people around her. It soon becomes clear she has a history in Paris, and a hidden agenda concerning a romantic figure from her past, ultimately involving family, friends, and strangers in her hunt for answers.

Rose is a deeply earnest film and frequently hilarious film about love, commitment, and tolerance. It considers a disease not well represented in cinema and offers an alternative take with few easy answers, while also being something of a crowd pleaser. Rose reaches for emotional catharsis in music, humour, and drama.

Rose is based on the lives and experiences of two of the director's sisters, one who is schizophrenic and the other who is her caregiver.

Director Niels Arden Oplev graduated from National Film School of Denmark in 1989 and made an impressive debut with his student work Winter's End, starring screen legend Max Von Sydow, which was nominated for a student Academy Award. His features include We Shall Overcome, Worlds Apart, and the Swedish adaptation of Stieg Larsson's The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.

"Gråbøl is superb throughout, recognizing Inger as a complicated individual who has a lot more going on than just her illness." -Jennie Kermode, Eye For Film

"While Rose is well made and works from an insightful, tightly written script, the highlight of the film is definitely the incredible performance of established Danish film and television actress Sofie Grabøl as Inger." -Monica Reid, Far Out Magazine
